Alfie, Haathi & the Magic Bioscope – new app release by Growl Media

October 14, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 20 Comments

At the beginning of October, Appy Kids, a subsidiary of Growl Media launched its very first interactive storybook, Alfie, Haathi & the Magic Bioscope.

This new app is the first of its kind built entirely on the Eureekah platform. Eureekah is an app development framework that gives both designers and creative professionals a faster and more collaborative workflow along with a drag-and-drop interface. Growl Media’s emphasis on early educational content, interactivity and animation are key to making the content extremely engaging.

I have this downloaded on my iPad and iPhone and it’s great to take with us on the go, when we have to wait at the doctor’s office or on a long car trip. The animation is bright, whimsical and exciting as Alfie, a curious little boy from India and his elephant pal Haathi explore. In each scene children can interact with animals, objects and Alfie and Haathi. With a simple touch, a different culture is brought to life and Bollywood music fills the air.

The story takes off when Alfie and Haathi discover a dusty old box, which is the gateway to fun adventures and a magical world. Ultimately it’s a story about a little boy from India, his best friend and the true meaning of friendship.

Learning about different cultures and lifestyles is a great stepping stone to expanding our children’s worlds, letting them know how different, yet how alike kids are all over.

 Features:

– An interactive storytelling experience.

– “Read to me” option allows parents to turn off the voice-over and read the storybook to their children themselves.

– Page selector allows for easy navigation to a non-consecutive page.

– Professional audio narration.

– Custom background audio for each scene created by acclaimed Bollywood music producer Ram Sampath.

– Hints to guide parents and kids by highlighting all interactions in each scene.

– Objects, words and characters come to life with animations and/or interesting and educational factoids.

– This app is universal and has been optimised for Retina displays and the iPad.

 .

You can check out Alfie, Haathi & The Magic Bioscope at the iTunes App Store.

Social Bookmarking: Have Fun and Increase Your Network Influence

October 9, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 24 Comments

It seems like the Internet has been around forever, but, it’s a relatively new medium in the grand scope of communications. Yet, it is such a huge factor in how we interact with one another these days.

The first thing I do when I wake up is check my email. So much of our lives these days is about sharing online and there are so many different ways. Twitter and Facebook already seem second-nature.

Social Bookmarking is a great way to find, keep track of and share information that we perceive as interesting or newsworthy with our friends, family and the general world.

socialbookmarksite.net
Social Bookmarking is constantly growing, especially lately with the advent of Pinterest, which I believe is pretty straightforward and easy to pick up. Now, when I want to pick out my favorite pair of boots or decide what color to paint my bedroom, I can create boards and share them with my friends all over to get opinions. They can add to my boards or re-pin anything of merit that they want to save or share. So many people now are exchanging recipes, quotes, and decorating tips. Companies have hopped on the bandwagon and gained a newfound audience. I find that it brings great traffic to my blog as well if my content is out there.
Some of the most popular Social Bookmarking sites are Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon, Delicious and Diigo. I like having focused content and the ability to see people’s opinions and ratings. It’s a streamlined way to get information you find pertinent, to keep and to share.
Being a bit of a social media junkie and pop culture afficionado, here are a few things I’ve bookmarked and shared lately:
Foods To Avoid When the Government Shuts Down is something I never thought I’d need to know.
For my dog loving friends, Cute Golden Retriever Loves to Listen to Guitar. This dog loves jammin’ but hates when the music stops.
After all this roaming around, you can Enjoy a Moment of Calm. This is one of my favorites as the days have becoming increasingly busy lately. Previously, I had to make a trip to the ashram for this.
Social Bookmarking helps us increase our network influence and expand our world and all the while still keep it manageable. That’s quite a feat.

What’s Essential with Nordic Naturals

October 6, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 19 Comments

Now that the school year is in full-swing, I’m always thinking of ways to help keep those I love healthy and boost their immune systems. Omega-3 fish oils are important for children, teens and all of us for many reasons. Many research studies have shown that they help support learning ability, brain development, sharpness and focus. You can check out more information here.

Omega-3’s are part of every cell in our body, including the brain. They help with attention, memory and a balanced nervous system. I personally buy Nordic Naturals Omega-3 supplements because I feel they are the purest and most effective. I love that they take such great care with their products and have wonderful options for both children and adults.

Nordic Naturals, which is the #1 fish oil in the U.S. today, is committed to giving each generation what it needs to grow strong and healthy. In addition to manufacturing premium Omega-3’s, Nordic Naturals will also provide one lucky school with $3,000 to spend on essential school supplies.

The What’s Essential™ School Supplies Giveaway will run from September 20 – October 31, 2013 and anyone can nominate a school that they want to help support. Grade Schools, middle schools and high schools are all eligible to win and the first 500 schools entered and verified will receive a complimentary copy of Amazing Grades by Pat Wyman for their school library.

Then, in November, one school will be randomly chosen (via Rafflecopter) to win the amazing grand prize – a check for $3,000.

While each person may enter their favorite school just once, more than one person can nominate that school. So why not help get the word out there to the community. The more nominations a school receives, the better their chances to win.

I agree with Nordic Naturals that what is essential is to help support families, children, and schools and to further education.

To join in, please check out and enter the giveaway on Nordic Naturals’ Facebook page.

All Strange Daze Indeed readers are also offered the code: SSGIVEAWAY to get 15% off their entire online order at Nordic Naturals (good until 10/31/13).

Wishing all a happy and healthy school year!

Disclosure: This is a partnered post with Nordic Naturals. I received samples of the product, however all opinions herein are strictly my own.

Win $100 Amazon or Paypal Cash – Bronze by B.B. Shepherd BookBlast

Bronze
 The Glister Journals: Bronze

Allison Anderson knows she’s a little different, but it hadn’t bothered her too much-until now. Moving away from everything she’s ever known to a new house, new neighborhood, and new school is bad enough, but it’s her first year of high school too, making it even more intimidating. She’s more aware of her social and physical limitations than ever before. And then there are the new people she meets: the tough-looking girl in her home room; the cute but dangerous-looking boy she first saw before school even started; the quiet, older girl who keeps to herself; the sullen-looking, seemingly isolated junior that doesn’t seem to trust or like her at all. Can she trust them?

While the peaceful situation of her new home only amplifies the sound of her own doubts, she begins to learn that things are not always what they seem, and her world is turned upside-down by these new friends, two-legged and otherwise. Life soon becomes more complicated, and much more interesting!

About The Glister Journals series:

The Glister Journals series is told from the perspective of a normal but not average teenage girl. It is not obvious, but Allison has a mild pervasive developmental disorder (autism spectrum). She thinks and experiences things a little differently from most of the other kids. In the past it has caused her to be alienated at best and bullied at worst. After the family moves, she becomes involved with a group of teens that open up new worlds to her.

The four book series follows her through high school but is equally about her friends who have their own problems, fears, and aspects of their lives they’d rather keep quiet. There is action—mostly in the form of equestrian and extreme sports—and though there are only hints of it in Bronze, there is a love story which will play a more prominent part as the series progresses. The main story is about assumptions, acceptance, love, and friendship, though there are other themes running throughout the series.

She also likes trying to find the funny side of things. She admits to being a hopeless romantic and often gets in trouble for her sense of humor. Bronze is her debut novel, the first in a series of four called The Glister Journals. She currently works full time as a music professional and educator, and lives in the San Francisco Bay area with her youngest daughter and a very silly cat.

Blogging and Brand Rep

September 28, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 23 Comments

blogskinny.com

I would definitely put myself in this category. If I’m asked to post about something that I am opposed to, I turn it down, because I like the idea of blogging with integrity. This is not to say that a blogger cannot make a mistake and find out later down the line that the brand actually is not reputable.

For example, I write about and use natural products whenever I can find them. For that reason, it just doesn’t make sense for me to write about bathroom or rug cleaners that are mostly toxic, or snacks where you have to read through a long list of chemical ingredients just to find something natural hidden in there.

I am in quite a few blogger networks which also makes it easier to find the “rotten apples”, so to speak. If something about a brand is disreputable, whether it be how they market or produce their products, we, as bloggers, will share this with our colleagues. The opposite also holds true with wonderful finds.

Find the Perfect Dress for your Special Occasion at DressFirst

September 28, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 26 Comments

Sometimes I think I didn’t get the shopping gene, the one that makes you want to run to every sale and shop at every opportunity. I find this is true mostly when shopping for myself. I hate to go from store to store, and, although I find it somewhat easy to pick up casual clothes when needed, whenever I need a dress I just simply can’t find the right one. Very frustrating!

Recently I was invited to a dinner party and wanted to wear a dress that would express my personality and flatter me, so I began doing research online. I’m much happier shopping online from the comfort of my home where I find that the whole day hasn’t somehow magically disappeared like it does at the shopping mall.

I didn’t want to break the bank or freak out at the prices, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that DressFirst, a leading wedding dress company, has introduced a great collection of cocktail dresses that are affordable and fashionable. They are constantly releasing new designs that incorporate personality, quality and style. Just what I was looking for.

Here are a few that I am looking at:

This Sheath V-neck Short/Mini Tulle Charmeuse Cocktail Dress With Lace Beading comes in a variety of sizes and more colors than one usually finds.

I also love this next Sheath dress and feel that it makes a statement (and it’s on sale for $130.99).

Sheath, One-Shoulder Short Mini-Chiffon Cocktail Dress with Ruffle Beading

DressFirst features various collections of wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses, and evening dresses along with matching accessories and shoes. I plan to share this with quite a few friends who are looking for high quality and the latest styles at affordable prices for themselves and their daughters.

This is one of my favorite jewelry sets at a very reasonable price ($24.69):

So, let me re-evaluate here. It’s not really the shopping I dislike. It’s the dragging myself from store to store and not finding anything, then coming home only to collapse in exhaustion. And after that, it’s time to come up with something for dinner. Not fun!

With DressFirst, I’m happy at home, excited about what I’ve found for that special occasion and still full of energy to enjoy the day.

Maybe I do have that shopping gene after all, because I’m thrilled when I find something just right for myself, family or friends. I think I’ve just been dragged around in too many futile pursuits!

My DVR is pissed off!

September 22, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 28 Comments

My DVR is seriously pissed off at me. I’ve been so busy the past month that I haven’t been paying attention to it and now it’s full, bloated and surly!

How in the world will I be able to record the new and returning Fall shows: The Voice, Survivor: Blood & Water, The Amazing Race, Revenge, Parenthood, The Blacklist and more. I suppose I could just give up TV, but, then again, no.

What are you looking forward to watching this Fall? And do you find you have the time or is your DVR full as well?

Teespring: Design and Fund Tees You Love

September 16, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 21 Comments

One of my dreams has always been to be a graphic designer for t-shirts. I’ve bought some of my favorite and most cherished designs online for myself, family and friends.

In my journeys online, I’ve recently discovered Teespring. Teespring is a very cool crowdfunding platform for groups, communities and causes to design and sell custom apparel. The seller keeps the profit from the shirt so you can use Teespring as a fundraising tool or to earn some extra money.

Anyone can engage with the site and design a shirt to sell via Facebook, Twitter or anyplace else online.

I have a very cool Facebook group with friends I’ve known for years. We are like family. It would be a blast to design a shirt for our group.

Basically, Teespring does most of the heavy lifting for you! The best part is that the shirts don’t print and ship until a date determined by the seller. This ensures that you have to pay nothing upfront, have basically no risk and don’t have to deal with the right number of shirts to order.

You can have some fun and check out the designer if you go to teespring.com/design. You can upload your own art or work with their extensive library of over 10,000 pieces of art and more than 50 fonts.

The following are some awesome examples of what people have done on Teespring:

A couple sold this “Love makes a family shirt” to raise money to adopt.

Here’s another one which included children’s and toddler’s shirts to help raise money for an 11-year-old to sing in a children’s choir in Hungary.

And, since I live in the Boston area, this shirt is particularly dear to my heart and raised over 85k for Boston relief.

Why not have shirts that mean something to you personally and that you can be proud to sell and wear? I’m looking forward to designing a shirt and fulfilling one of my dreams. What might Teespring do for you?

I love watching funny commercials and now the Kia Hamsters are back to introduce the new 2014 Soul! Being a fan of their antics, I was intrigued to see what they’d got up to now and this is one of my favorites! I love the music by Lady GaGa and the transformation.

2014 Soul! shown. Expected Fall 2013

Some of my favorite parts are their work-out shirts, the one who is trying to be oh-so-suave on the treadmill to pick up chicks and falls on his face as well as their beauty regime. But, the icing on the cake is most definitely the total transformation as they go from dumpy to debonair!

What is your favorite part of the new Kia Hamsters commercial?
