Fun New Educational Apps for your Kids Inspire Creative Play! Introducing #DumbWaysJR

June 10, 2016 By Debra Pearlstein 21 Comments

This post is sponsored by Dumb Ways JR and The Motherhood, but all opinions herein are mine.

Open-ended play allows our children to discover, to wander, to dream! It is the doorway to the imagination. We can provide the foundation, but also leave the windows open.

The-best-teachers-300x216

Dumb Ways to Die began in 2012 as a public service announcement by Metro Trains in Australia. It was a campaign designed to promote railroad safety, and safety in general. Its inspiration is that people often pay more attention when learning is presented in fun, unique and interesting ways. The PSA video with its insanely catchy theme song soon became an internet sensation through social media and sharing.  Since then, Metro Trains Melbourne’s Dumb Ways to Die apps have celebrated a combined 200 million downloads!

Kids and adults alike have taken to the Dumb Ways characters, but, before they grew up, these silly guys were already making mischief in all sorts of places – in kitchens, planes, trains and more!

Check out Dumb Ways JR!

Dumb Ways JR is a brand-new educational platform for younger kids, aged 3-7 (though older kids love it too!). Recently released, now you can be one of the first families to explore the new apps which are similar to those for older kids but without any gore.

Two new Dumb Ways JR apps are currently available on Apple and Android devices.

Dumb Ways JR Boffo’s Breakfast focuses on teaching young kids about safety while cooking and encourages creativity and role-play fun. In this game, Boffo’s hungry and you’re the chef so it’s time to make him breakfast! Our 6-year old loved cooking up some delicious and not so yummy creations and watching Boffo’s reaction, from smiles and claps to grimaces when he ate a plate full of fish and toothpaste! The open-ended play gave her the chance to experiment and learn and the music kept her entertained while she waited with me for a doctor’s appointment.

This game is wonderful for so many reasons! It fans the fires of your children’s imagination without being too complicated. Kids interact with the game by tapping, stirring, mixing and swiping. This really allows their own creativity to grow and flourish as they create endless food mash-ups for their silly hungry new friend. It also subtly reinforces the lessons we teach them in our own kitchens, such as how to stay safe and not get burned.

IMG_9694

Boffo’s face when the stove is turned up too high!

The second app we downloaded was Dumb Ways JR Loopy’s Train Set which was my daughter’s second favorite.

loopys

This game has two modes – Drive and Build – with three different levels in each mode, making it great for both younger and older kids. With the same adorable characters, it allows kids and families to explore how trains work, creating their own narratives as they help passengers board and exit the train. In Build mode, the children create their own tracks and can add houses, trees and animals. My daughter loved the train whistle. In fact, all the animations and sound effects are wonderful.

Both games have a For Parents button which is very helpful and insightful and both re-inforce the message of safety in a fun and engaging way.

IMG_9682

There are also two more adventures coming from Dumb Ways JR, so be on the lookout! I would tell you more, but, I don’t want to spill the beans. Besides, then, someone might trip on them. 😀

Why not download the apps now. They’re ad-free and inexpensive with no in-app purchases.

Make Family Dental Care Fun With REACH & Firefly

June 8, 2016 By Debra Pearlstein 22 Comments

I participated in this sponsored campaign on behalf of Firefly®, REACH®, and One2One Network. All opinions stated are my own.

IMG_9617

Do you struggle to get your kids to brush and rinse their teeth? Are you worried about their oral health in the future? If so, you’re like most parents. The challenge is to find ways to get your kids excited about these daily routines and provide a good foundation while they are young.

My ground rules are:  Don’t put too much pressure on them and use positive reinforcement when they do brush.

Brushing your own teeth with them is also helpful as kids love to emulate their parents.

And, get them their own toothbrush and mouth rinse to make dental care fun! I suggest Firefly products. A leader in children’s oral care solutions, Firefly has recently expanded their line of toothbrushes to include even more characters and ADA-approved products. You can’t beat good clean fun at an affordable price.

IMG_9583Check out this Kylo Ren Lightsaber toothbrush from the Firefly Star Wars Collection! With character voices, memorable quotes, flashing lights and lightsaber sound effects, kids will want to conquer the dark side of cavities. The brush lights up for 60 seconds which is a great reminder to brush for one full minute on each row of teeth. You’ll find it at Walmart and Walgreens with a protective cap to keep any bacteria out.

In addition, the new Firefly Spiderman Pump Rinse, also found at Walmart, is fun, sugar and alcohol free and has a fruity melon flavor that kids love.  Because it comes with its own convenient no-mess cup, kids can dispense just the right amount and keep your sinks clean.

IMG_9638

Dental care is so important for many reasons. It also affects our overall health. But, who says brushing your teeth as an adult can’t be fun? I find that when you have the right tools, it really is enjoyable! Did you know that you should change your toothbrush every three months? It also needs to be changed every time you get over a cold! Replacing a toothbrush this often means that it’s a good idea to always have extras around.

I’ve been trying out the new REACH UltraClean and the REACH Advanced Design Toothbrushes and I’m a big fan of both! In fact, I actually enjoy alternating between the two to get what I feel is optimum care.

IMG_9592

You can find the REACH UltraClean toothbrush at Walmart and Target. With its floss-like bristles and tongue cleaner, it really leaves you with that just from the dentist smooth clean feel! You can get it in a single pack or a 4-count value pack, so you’ll always have extras for guests or to take with you on the go.

IMG_9607

The big winner for me is the REACH Advanced Design Toothbrush. It has longer outer bristles and shorter inner bristles to perfectly clean along the gum line and the plaque from each and every tooth. I really feel that I can reach way in with this brush to get the back teeth deeply clean without missing anything. This toothbrush is available at Walmart and Walgreens in a value pack of two toothbrushes.

Fall in love with Parenthood – Now on UPtv Starting 5/30!

May 30, 2016 By Debra Pearlstein 23 Comments

PARENTHOOD -- Pictured: (l-r) top row; Peter Krause as Adam Braverman, Sarah Ramos as Haddie Braverman, Dax Shepard as Crosby Braverman, Lauren Graham as Sarah Braverman, Miles Heizer as Drew Holt, Sam Jaeger as Joel Graham, bottom row; Monica Potter as Kristina Braverman, Max Burkholder as Max Braverman, Craig T. Nelson as Zeek Braverman, Bonnie Bedelia as Camille Braverman, Mae Whitman as Amber Holt, Erika Christensen as Julia Braverman-Graham, Savannah Rae as Sydney Graham -- NBC Photo: Art Streiber.

“Families are the compass that guide us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.” —  Brad Henry

Every once in a while, a show comes along that brilliantly touches our hearts as well as our minds. Parenthood is that rare type of show and one of the best stories about family there is. Starting on May 20, Parenthood will launch on UPtv at 8 pm with episodes running through midnight.

Now is the time to catch this heartwarming show if you haven’t seen it, or, for those who have already fallen in love with the series, to re-visit Parenthood from the beginning.

13267320_908359635949886_508398948_a

This critically acclaimed drama follows the ups and downs of the Braverman family, starting with Zeek and Camille, the matriarch and patriarch. The four adult Braverman siblings – Adam, Sarah, Crosby and Julia share the joys, trials, heartbreaks and celebrations of parenthood.

#WelcometoParenthood #THIS

052016_UPTV_PARENTHOOD_UPS_FB

From my perspective, Adam (Peter Krause) is the more responsible brother. As the oldest, he’s had to be, but, that doesn’t necessarily mean he always wants to. Sarah (Lauren Graham), is the somewhat wild child, divorced with two kids and, as the saga begins, moving back home with her parents for financial reasons. Crosby (Dax Shepard) is the third child, striving to find his place in the world who gets an unexpected surprise in the premiere. Julia (Erika Christensen), the youngest child, is a competitive lawyer, and is as much by the book as Sarah is a free spirit.

Where this all becomes fascinating to me is how their personalities blend as they grow and the categories they fit in change and overlap. With all the kids and grandkids, this large family goes through a lot of heartache and change, but the one constant is them always being there for one another.

I fell in love with this show because it is so authentic and true to life, because it isn’t afraid to explore any issue, and because of the family camaraderie. With any up or down, they join forces to either celebrate or brainstorm a plan.

One of my favorite stories involves Adam and his wife Kristina’s son, Max, who starts the series at age 9. Diagnosed with Aspergers, his is not an easy road, but, his struggles and triumphs are moving and affect the family, just as everyone’s actions affect one another.

UPtv sent us a premiere watching kit for Parenthood which is really cool!

IMG_9423 IMG_9444

A tote bag, light blanket to snuggle on the couch, tissues, wineglass and popcorn!

And, my favorite of all, this hoodie to which they added my name. I love it because when you watch The Bravermans, you really become part of the family!

parenthood

This is a show the whole family will love. There is plenty of humor mixed with the drama, wonderful stories and a stellar cast!

So grab your snack and beverage of choice and catch the premiere 5/30 at 8pm. If you want to binge watch, there will be five episodes Monday night. Check out the schedule on UPtv for more Parenthood!

Have you watched Parenthood? Who is your favorite character?

Candlelight Kisses by Jennifer Youngblood & Sandra Poole

Book #1 In the Almost An Angel Series

A romantic and zany new series by bestselling authors Jennifer Youngblood and Sandra Poole

Gracie Louise Andrews had led a perfectly ordinary, humdrum life–right up until the day she died and became an angel … err … almost an angel. In order to become a real angel, she must prove herself. She’s given the assignment to help couples find lasting love–an overwhelming task, considering her own love life was a complete disaster. Begrudgingly, Gracie accepts her new role and is assigned her first couple: Alex Swanson and Dawson Allen.

Alex, a self-made business owner who has her nose constantly to the grind, regrets losing Dawson, the love of her life. Formerly the Marketing Director of Alex’s company, Dawson has moved out of state and is no longer a part of her life.

Gracie uses her newfound angel powers to orchestrate a wacky plan to bring the couple back together. Things go awry when a handsome, mysterious stranger sweeps Gracie off her feet and threatens to distract her from her mission. Will her zany antics save the day, or will she bumble the whole thing up and forgo any chance of ever becoming an angel?

Excerpt From Candlelight Kisses

She was floating, drifting without a care in the world. It was the feeling of being caught up in a glorious dream where time and space were irrelevant. “Wow! This is incredible!” Gracie sighed contentedly, not wanting to wake up, but her eyes seemed to have a mind of their own as they popped open. She glanced around, expecting to see the familiar surroundings of her bedroom but then realized with a jolt that her favorite overstuffed chair and other comfy furnishings had been replaced with a metal chair, nondescript walls, and some sort of medical device. There was a solid red line going across the screen, and this annoying beeping kept wailing like an opera singer who’d gotten stuck on the same note. Her mind whirled in confusion as she realized that she was hovering in midair, her back pressed against the ceiling.

Then she noticed that the room was full of people, gathered around a hospital table, frantically working to revive someone—a woman. She looked down, only mildly curious about whom the person could be. She was too busy enjoying being weightless and the carefree feeling that had overtaken her. All of her problems seemed obsolete, and she felt free and unencumbered, a happy balloon sailing in the air. Something about the scene below drew her attention, and she realized that the people scurrying about were doctors and nurses. Their faces were pinched and drawn. She wondered why they were all so sad.

The doctor, a middle-aged man with graying temples shook his head. “We’ve done all we can do.” There was a note of finality in his voice as his hands fell limp to his side. A nurse nodded and began pulling a sheet over the woman’s head. It was only then that Gracie caught a glimpse of the lifeless girl on the table. A soundless scream wrenched from her throat as she recognized the face. It was her!

Praise for Book

“If you like the action of Divergent, romance of Twilight, and super human powers like X-men, you’ll absolutely love this book.”

“I have read a lot of young adult science fiction/romance and this is right up there with the best of them.”

“I was captured from the beginning by Desiree’s story, but even more so by the handsome and charming Blake.”

Excerpt

Following the rescue came the terror. Terror for what I’d done, what I could do. The realization that my abilities extended beyond what I had ever, ever anticipated. I’d been pushing myself, not attempting the impossible. Emotions from that night teem inside of me; so much rage from my date, fright for the injured people, and ultimately dismay for myself. For what I am.
After fruitless searching, I thought I accepted it. Gave up on ever understanding. But I didn’t.
I stare down at my empty yet terrifyingly powerful hands. Clenching them into fists, I spin and sprint away. Again I internalize the useless emotions, the lingering doubt.
Hope. This hope I’ve been given is a dangerous thing

Potty Training Tips with Pampers Easy Ups and a Giveaway! #PampersEasyUps

April 28, 2016 By Debra Pearlstein 50 Comments

Pampers Easy Ups Logo Rev

This post and giveaway were made possible by iConnect and Pampers. I was compensated for my participation in this campaign, but all opinions are 100% mine.

While potty training is a wonderful milestone for toddlers and parents, it can also be very stressful! But, fear not! We have some help for you. Spring is the time many families kick-off potty training so they are ready for summer fun and then for the start of preschool. Often, potty training can seem overwhelming and when minor leaks or accidents occur, it can feel like a a disappointment. Luckily, Pampers Easy Ups help makes this journey a little easier by providing better leak protection than the leading competitor.

easyups easyups1

We tried everything in the quest for the perfect way to potty train, but, the truth is, there is no perfect way. It’s good to tailor your program to your children and your particular style of parenting. Some tips that worked for us are reading to the kids on the potty to take their mind off focusing too hard on the task at hand as well as putting their books in a basket nearby so they want to stay longer.

We had rewards like their favorite m&m’s, gummy bears, bubbles or stickers as they progressed. Special achievements included a trip to the toy store or an ice cream sundae. We had books specifically about potty training and we limited night time liquids.

file000885387687
While these all worked to some extent, I really feel that the most successful method is support and encouragement as well as minimizing failures. Make the process fun not stressful. Show your children love and they will get there when it’s time for them.

Training pants support the diaper-to-underwear transition for toddlers and their families as they have a more underwear-like look and feel while still helping to keep messes off clothing, bedding and other surfaces no matter where accidents happen: at home, on-the-go or overnight.

Pampers Easy Ups work during the day AND night, enabling toddlers and moms to confidently and completely transition from diapers to underwear.

Pampers Easy Ups Potty Training Tips from L. Jana, MD DrLauraJana-037

1. Promote potty learning. Learning how to use the potty takes plenty of time and patience. It’s more than just training; it is a learning opportunity for toddlers and parents alike that should be enjoyable. After all, mastering this concept of “potty learning” with your little one is a big accomplishment and milestone.

2. Team Spirit. It is important to keep in mind that “teamwork makes the dream work,”especially in the case of potty training. You are not only your child’s biggest fan, you are also their potty training coach. Remember to stay calm in the face of potty accidents and encourage your little one to not worry and try again!

3. Be Prepared. Potty training is an unpredictable adventure that you can best prepare for by ensuring you have all practical supplies on hand. These supplies will help you through any obstacle and can help foster your child’s interest and independence – from a step stool (to improve access to the toilet) or potty seat to training pants. That’s why I’m happy to partner with Pampers, whose Easy Ups training pants are designed to help the diaper-to-underwear transition by allowing potty-training toddlers to set aside their diapers and wear something with a more underwear-like look and feel that still helps contain accidental messes no matter wherever they happen: at home, on-the-go or overnight.

4. Celebrate every win. As with any learning experience, young children can learn a lot from both their potty successes and their setbacks. While potty accidents are an inevitable (and admittedly inconvenient) aspect of potty learning, they shouldn’t dominate your day-to-day discussions. Instead, simply help your child learn to cope with and clean up any messes, and focus your attention on celebrating your child’s efforts and successes with plenty of hugs and words of encouragement.

5. Watch for signs of readiness. Just about all children give subtle (and some not-so-subtle) signs that they are ready for potty training. These signs of readiness typically include using their words to express themselves, toddling their own way to the bathroom, pulling down their own pants, saying they want to use the “big potty,” and being aware of the sensation of peeing or pooping, characteristically noticeable when young children suddenly stop what they’re doing as they feel themselves start to go. It is also helpful and increases the likelihood of potty training interest when children start to be bothered by their messy diapers, as that can serve as a good motivation for using the potty instead!

6. Start making connections. There’s a lot that you can do to help your child be well-prepared to successfully use the potty long before he or she actually starts doing it. Making up a fun song or reading engaging children’s books about potty training, such as You and Me Against the Pee! (which I co-authored) can go a long way towards making the idea of potty training a more welcome and eagerly anticipated activity. You can take this familiarity a step further by letting your toddler accompany you into the bathroom when you need to go so that he both becomes familiar with the routine and comfortable with the idea of using the toilet, rather than being afraid of or intimidated by it!

Join @Pampers on April 28th from 9-10pmEST as they host a Twitter Party with Dr. Laura Jana, pediatrician, award-winning parenting book author and potty training expert who co-authored to Its You and Me Against the Pee…and the Poop, Too! MiMedia Personal Cloud – Spring Clean and Organize Your Digital Life!

April 24, 2016 By Debra Pearlstein 3 Comments

I’m on a Spring Cleaning kick! Getting organized and reducing the clutter really has brightened my outlook. However, it’s not just my home that needs sprucing up, but my digital life as well.

If you’re like me, you have photos, videos, music and documents in various places: on your desktop/laptop, your tablet, and your smartphone, on Facebook, Flickr, and more! I don’t like feeling scattered and I long to have everything in one spot.

Remember the olden days of photos everywhere or stuffed into albums to be organized later, albums that would get worn out, dogeared or destroyed? I’m so glad those days are over.

photographs

For the past month, I’ve had the chance to explore MiMedia, a next-generation personal cloud that keeps all my digital memories organized and safe. I have MiMedia on my laptop, my iPad and iPhone where it’s always easy to access and add to.

Photos, videos and music slowly encroach on and take up your device’s memory, but MiMedia can quickly move them for you. MiMedia can be used on iOS and Android and can also upload from your social networks and other sources. With a simple click you can import from Facebook, Dropbox, Goggle+, Flickr, and more.

You can use automatic uploads or choose which items you want to add to MiMedia.

For me, lately, my motto is “Simplify, whenever possible!” And, holy space, Batman! I’ve now got all the digital room I could wish for.

MiMedia has a clean user-friendly interface, fast uploading speeds and also allows you to share with family and friends privately. You can choose what they see by sending them a link to specific photos/videos. This is great when you want to share vacation photos with the kids’ grandparents or get an opinion from a colleague of what photos to use in an article.

Photos and videos can be marked as Favorites or organized into Collections. You can curate, personalize and rediscover your digital memories and you don’t have to be a tech guru. It’s simple and fun to use!

Getting organized and reducing clutter by not having everything scattered all over the place has helped clear my mind, making room for new ideas and inspiration! With MiMedia, I love having more space on my iPad, iPhone and laptop as they run much more efficiently.

Free your mind, organize your oft-cluttered digital life, and let your imagination fill the wide open spaces!
