My Resolution for the New Year – Be Kind to Yourself!

January 6, 2013 By Debra Pearlstein 34 Comments

Resolutions – Be Kind to Yourself

Though it is my goal not to make resolutions this year, perhaps this is one I will try to keep, be kind to yourself.

Bascially, all the things I would resolve to do are already things I am trying to do – eat healthier, exercise more, get more organized, save more money.

Funny thing I’ve found about resolutions. When you’re feeling good, they are easy to keep. When life, as it inevitably does, adds stress, they become harder. I suppose those are the times that challenge us – to keep the resolutions even through the hard times.

But, I’ve been through a very hard year. I have lost someone very very dear to me, perhaps the most dear.

That has set into motion a chain of events that have been extremely painful and stressful. Unfortunately, stress has a way of kicking everything into overdrive – including any physical problems like fibromyalgia.

There is no way out of certain things. For me, the only way is to try to stay in the present moment as much as possible and take things one step at a time. Try to find support in whatever way you can, whether that be through friends, family or faith.

Looking at everything all at once becomes too overwhelming and really is self-defeating in many ways for me. Just one step at a time.

And above all, be kind to yourself, love yourself, give yourself a break. There is another side to all this, focus on that. Think of how good you will feel and focus on the positive.

I write this for myself and for anyone going through anything similar. Sometimes the best resolution is to be kind to ourselves.

I wish everyone a wonderful 2013!

Hi Debra, I totally agree, live for the moment. When times get rough, see others ways that you are blessed. My New Year resolution is to tackle my problems in a different way than I have in the past. You know what they say, if you try the same thing and it ends in failure.. maybe you should try a different way.

I’m sorry for your loss.It is always easy to forget to be kind to yourself.Always trying to please others. I’ve found that if I’m not happy I can’t make anyone else happy either.

When you believe that you have one all you can do – try to relax and treat yourself. Stay optimistic and stick to your goals.

I’m sorry for your loss. I hope 2013 is a better year for you. It’s definitely easy to let stress and tough times lead you into a downward spiral–I’ve been there too.

Sympathies on your loss. I think in times of great stress it’s very easy to focus so much on responding to the problem that it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself. It’s something I’m going to try and keep in mind during the coming year.

    Best wishes for 2013.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend of 11+ years on January 2nd of this year. I am still having a hard time coping. I have noticed that while I am grieving, I have tended to be very hard on myself… so that is something I need to work on

That is the best resolution I have ever, ever heard. Most ppl are too hard on themselves, and hard driving resolutions that are more like whips to crack over you and then make you feel guilty.
