Digital Media Academy – One of the 10 Best Summer Camps!

February 10, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 9 Comments

blue_logo

I enjoyed summer camp when I was a kid, but, here is a camp that I would have loved going to!

Founded at Stanford University, Digital Media Academy is ranked as one of the ten best summer camps in the world.

DMA summer camps are one or multiple week experiences taught by industry experts and tech professionals. Here kids, as well as teens, can learn computer programming, app development, 3D modeling, robotics, graphic design, filmmaking, and much more.

Campers will get hands-on experience creating projects using the latest hardware and software from Apple, Canon, Adobe, and more.

How cool would it to be to give your teen a pre-collegiate experience or build a child’s confidence through project-based learning?

Check out this video which shows The DMA Experience from Digital Media Academy.

With 25 locations at top universities throughout the U.S. and Canada, camps are filling fast. So why not register early to save money and stay off the wait list.

Care From The Comfort of Your Home and a Free Visit with Doctor On Demand! #FeelBetter

February 4, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 7 Comments

DoDlogo

This is a sponsored conversation on behalf of Doctor On Demand, however all opinions are strictly my own.

I loved living in Southern California, but, I seriously missed having changes in the weather! Now that I’m back in New England where I grew up, I’m re-evaluating that thought as we are hit by a series of blizzards that have left us buried in snow. I still would choose having variety though.

Some things I worry about during our storms though: Making sure we have enough food and water, hoping we don’t lose power, and not being able to go out when you want to.

Actually, Winter is a great time for Doctor On Demand! Doctor On Demand is a healthcare service that provides Video Visits with Board Certified Physicians, Psychologists and other medical consultants via smartphone, tablet and computer.

certified_physicians

The Winter is rough on everyone and this year’s flu season is particularly severe. In fact, the CDC recently declared a flu epidemic after 29 states reported experiencing high flu activity.

When you have the flu, you need to get treated immediately for antivirals to work – but hospitals are urging people with flu-like symptoms to avoid the ER.

So, why not let Doctor on Demand help? Doctor On Demand is graciously launching a promotion where your first video visit is FREE. Since we are in the midst of cold and flu season, this is a great time to try it out!

With Doctor On Demand, you can treat the flu from home using your smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer, by having a Video Visit with a Board Certified physician. Their physicians can diagnose, treat, and even write prescriptions for the flu and nearly any other non-emergency medical condition.

pediatricvisit

Doctor On Demand is free to register and the app is free to download. You can even enter your code upon registration, store it in your account, and use it at a later date.

Simply download the Doctor On Demand app on a smartphone or tablet or visit www.doctorondemand.com on your computer and provide a list of your symptoms. You’ll quickly be connected to a provider licensed in your state for a video visit.

My experience:

It’s very easy to use the app and I was asked to fill out some general information along with my current symptoms and any medication I might be taking. After that, a checklist appeared where I could check off any other issues that I might be having or any illnesses.

After a very short wait, Dr Tara greeted me. I used the video chat (you can use that or the audio chat). She was very pleasant and professional and made me feel very comfortable. She went over my history and we talked about my current injury. What was pretty cool was that I could show her the exact area of the pain and where it extended to. She was able to pinpoint the area and we got an idea of what was going on.

It seemed to be a shoulder strain and I asked and she explained to me the differences between a strain and a sprain and also when to use heat and when to use ice. It was very informative and helpful.

I’m taking her advice and my shoulder pain has eased up quite a bit. I’m alternating with heat and cold packs and continuing to take Ibuprophen for the inflammation.

I tend to use my right arm a great deal, and, as a writer/blogger it gets an extra workout, but, I am trying to rest it whenever possible.

I’ll follow up with my primary if it continues and possibly get physical therapy, but, I was very thankful for the help when I couldn’t go out and it was a relief to be comfortable at home and not waiting and waiting in a cold office.

There are times that you don’t have time to go to the doctor, where it’s inconvenient, where the weather is inclement or where you just would love to talk to someone with medical expertise. Doctor on Demand is a great resource that you can use from the comfort of your home.

Give Exercise a Sporting Chance

February 1, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 11 Comments

Exercise is beneficial for the mind, body and spirit. Physical activity reduces the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. It also boosts confidence, lifts your spirits and helps your brain cope better with stress.

Yet so many of us would rather slump in front of the TV than get up, get out and get moving. Watching the Superbowl  seems the closest some people will get to any action.

For those people who are conscious about their health and do exercise, the focus is very much on “working out” rather than playing a sport. Jogging before work, lifting weights at the gym or taking part in weekly exercise classes are all tried and tested ways of keeping active.

However, playing sports is the old fashioned way of keeping fit that few of us ever consider.

When we were kids we played sports and that kept us healthy. Running round the soccer field, shooting a few hoops or trying out for the track team were motivation enough to get our hearts pumping.

So why do so many of us grow out of playing sports, and opt, instead, for more structured ways of exercising? “Working out” has become an activity in its own right – it’s knocked all the fun out of getting fit with its personal goals and targets to pump more iron or run a faster mile.

In a Vanity Fair poll published in January 2014, the athletic goal most women said they wanted to achieve (28 per cent) was to get through an hour-long step aerobics class.

One of the top sporting ambitions for men was to complete a 3K run (20 per cent).

Where’s the fun in that?

1401182408icv66

Playing a sport incorporates all the fitness benefits associated with getting plenty of exercise with a whole list of added bonuses on top. Boost your social life by making new friends, feel the buzz from trying something new and enjoy the adrenaline rush from the thrill of competition, for example.

And you don’t have to go down the well-travelled path of signing up for a softball league or joining a soccer team.

There’s a a whole host of sports that will capture your imagination and get you excited about playing again.

You don’t even have to commit to a team. Try Taekwondo. Benefits include building strength and instilling discipline as well as helping you achieve self-defense skills. Taekwondo is a particularly active martial art and you can expect to burn around 360 calories during a 90 minute session.

If you’re looking for a graceful form of exercise to help reduce stress, consider tai chi. Though originally developed for self-defense, tai chi helps promote serenity through gentle, flowing movements and is often described as meditation in motion.

Ever thought about fencing? There are loads of local clubs looking for new members. As well as burning around 288 calories an hour, you’ll improve your balance, co-ordination, flexibility and reflexes.

Give badminton a shot. It’s very easy to master and is an intense aerobic work out burning the equivalent of a chocolate bar every half hour. If you join a club you’ll get the additional rush of playing competitively.

Most of all, try something you truly enjoy. We all spend enough time working; make exercise fun.

Win $50 Paypal or Amazon GC – Rough Edges Book Blast/Giveaway

Rough EdgesRough Edges by Kimberly Krey

Divorced mother, Allie Emerson, never imagined she’d be raising two teenage girls on her own. Between parenting and paying the bills, she hasn’t even thought about meeting a man. That changes once she hears local carpenter, Braden Fox, is in need of a secretary. Back in high school, Allie had done all she could to deny the sparks burning between her and Braden; perhaps now they could explore the possibilities.

Braden has heard all about what Terrance did to Allie and the girls, has been planning to stop by and see how she’s getting along, but Allie beats him to it by showing up at his shop in search of a job. Her single visit reignites the old flame Braden used to torch for her; trouble is, old feelings of resentment return as well. Allie did choose Terrance over him, after all. And as much as Braden wants Allie in his life, he’s not sure he can open his heart again.

With this second chance at romance, will the bumps in their relationship be too much to get over, or will this carpenter learn to smooth out the past?

What Do Your Facebook Likes Say About You?

January 28, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 14 Comments

Are you what you like on Social Media? Particularly on Facebook?

Cubeyou has been working in the marketing field for 4 years. Two years ago, in partnership with the University of Cambridge, they developed a Facebook app called  YouAreWhatYouLike  that helps discover your personality based on your Facebook activity and background.

cambridge_logo cubeyou_logo

It takes a few minutes, and ,without you taking a quiz or answering any questions, gives you your personality profile based on the scientific predictions of the Cambridge Psychometric Centre. Researchers analyzed data from 58,000-plus American Facebook users and made some educated guesses about personalities and behavior.

I tried it out and I have to say that the results surprised me. I don’t agree with the findings, but, what I realized was that my public persona is actually different from who I see myself as. I imagine part of that is because I often like friends’ pages to be supportive of their businesses, check out contests and sales that used to require likes.

My results: More conservative and traditional than liberal and artistic. More well-organized than spontaneous and flexible. More outgoing and active versus shy and reserved. More assertive and competitive than warm, trusting and cooperative.  More emotional and stressed than calm and relaxed.

This does not really fit me unless I’ve changed. I was always the artistic, liberal type in my group of friends, school, work and family. I majored in Semiotics and Communications. I studied art, journalism, creative writing, dance and literature for the most part. Geometry was my worst subject though I did well in Algebra. My art is abstract and colorful. Organized? I suppose I’ve had to become organized, but when I write or cook, there’s often a lot of chaos. Outgoing and active, sometimes. At other times, a total hermit watching old French movies. More assertive than trusting? Again, this is my Facebook persona I would say. Do you trust people on Facebook? More emotional and stressed than calm? Well, sure, if I’m calm, I’m generally doing yoga, listening to music or in a woodsy park, not on Facebook.

In any case, I find the discrepancy kind of fascinating and realize that the nature of Facebook shows me in an entirely different light when judged solely on what I ‘like’.

So, my personal recommendation is, try it for fun and see what you think!

If you want to know what your Facebook likes say about you, you can check out the free one-click test at http://youarewhatyoulike.com  that the researchers created.

Feel free to comment below on your results! I’m really curious now!

January 14, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 48 Comments

Well all, it’s 2015 and with a New Year comes the chance to try something new!

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Mama’s Got a New Look Giveaway Hop Event. A fabulous group of bloggers have come together to give all you special, deserving women a chance at a New Look for the New Year so be sure to hop around to all the blogs participating at the bottom of this post.

To me, every woman deserves to be pampered. In fact, often what creates radiance and a certain glow is relaxation and a good night’s sleep!

minkylove

I have something for both of those here as well as for any aches and pains that this Winter might bring.

minkywaterbottle

Here at Strange Daze Indeed, we’re giving away a Minky Swirl Plush Water Bottle from Warm Tradition.

Win your choice of pink, turquoise or black!

turquoiseminkyswirls
So, yes, with the temps reaching crazy lows and the wind howling outside, my minky plush hot water bottle has become my new best friend. Whether it’s soothing muscular or joint pain, easing my sore back, relieving cramps or soothing my tummy, it’s just all around blissful comfort. Something about the combination of gentle heat and incredible softness also helps ease me into a wonderful night’s sleep.

minkyuses

Warm Tradition has a whole slew of hot water bottles with all different covers, materials and patterns.  They make great bed warmers, help keep hands and feet warm, and are also great for soothing kids and pets. There are so many uses you will find.  These require no microwaving, no plugging in, just good old hot water.

Warm Tradition Hot Water Bottles are made in Germany under strict European safety guidelines and each is made of eco-friendly thermoplastic which makes them odorless, safe and fully recyclable. Each bottle is BPA free and Phtalate free – safe to use, so no worries. In fact, thermoplastic is designed to allow the heat to last for an average of 6 hours.

The bottles are also seamless preventing leaks and cracks by the way they are molded. The mouth of the water bottle is extra large which makes it simple to fill and the ‘easy grip’ cap is easy to open and close even for painful or sore hands.  Each water bottle is 7 inches wide x 12 inches high and has a volume of 2 liters.

The soft and furry mink swirls cover fits snug around the bottle and will help the heat last longer and, believe me, it feels luxurious. The covers are a great way to help protect your skin. They are removable and machine washable.

I really love my minky plush swirl hot water bottle. Between that and a soft blanket, I’m in heaven. Please enter below for a chance to win one for yourself!
