Oddka Vodka – Taste the Quirkiness!

December 15, 2012 By Debra Pearlstein 57 Comments

Here at Strange Daze Indeed, I’m always on the lookout for the unusual, the unique, the odd, so Oddka Vodka really caught my imagination.

Premium wine and spirits company Pernod Ricard launched a new brand of vodka, Oddka, by Wyborowa in October 2012. Currently available in Alabama, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and my home state of Massachusetts, Oddka will be expanding its distribution nationally and globally in spring 2013.

To begin the oddness, the voice and inspiration for Oddka is Wit Oddoski, a virtual character in the real world. Wit had his inception as a 2-D line drawing, a rare and odd condition that leads him to view the world at a different angle than others. Check out the interview with Wit here:

I think Wit’s very happy seeing the world upside down and inside out.

Adding to the unusual, Oddka is available in original, clear vodka and also in five rather unconventional flavors.

The one that intrigues me the most is Fresh Cut Grass. When I was young, I used to take drives with my parents out into the country, and, when we would pass certain areas, you could smell new mown hay. That became one of my favorite scents along with the summertime memory of the grass after my dad had just mowed the lawn. Ah, sweet nostalgia!

It’s crisp, fresh, citrusy, sweet and refreshing and somehow Oddka has figured out how to bottle it! This is a taste that goes great with Ginger Ale, Sprite or Iced Tea. To ramp up the crisp taste, add cucumber, mint and lemon juice. There are so many variations. This would be great for outdoor summer parties.

But, they don’t stop there! No! Adding to drinks that you don’t merely taste but also experience, there is also Electricity which is described as “a bolt of lightning in a bottle – but safer” This surely sparks my curiosity as well. I’m thinking Halloween for this one. I’d mix it with Coca-Cola.

Next is Salty Caramel Popcorn. Slightly sweet, slightly salty, intriguing with a feel good ending. Mix with soda water, Fanta, or Ginger Ale.

They also have Apple Pie flavor for when you want apples and cinnamon and Grandma just isn’t in a pie-baking mood. I’d drink this for the holidays.

And then, just when you think things are cool again, along comes Wasabi flavor to heat up your tastebuds and add some spice to your life. I’ve always loved Wasabi, the way it clears my sinuses and wakes up my senses. This makes a great Bloody Mary and is fabulous with ginger ale.

To learn more about Oddka and Wit’s adventures, “Like” Oddka Vodka on Facebook or follow Wit on Twitter at @WitOddoski.

Celebrate the strange!

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Oddka.

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen Book Blast – Win $50 Amazon or Paypal!

December 13, 2012 By Debra Pearlstein 1 Comment

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen

Was Mr. Darcy real? Is time travel really possible? For pragmatic Manhattan artist Eliza Knight the answer to both questions is absolutely, Yes! And Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley Farms, Virginia is the reason why!
His tale of love and romance in Regency England leaves Eliza in no doubt that Fitz Darcy is the embodiment of Jane Austen’s legendary hero. And she’s falling in love with him. But can the man who loved the inimitable Jane Austen ever love average, ordinary Eliza Knight?
Eliza’s doubts grow, perhaps out of proportion, when things start to happen in the quiet hamlet of Chawton, England; events that could change everything. Will the beloved author become the wedge that divides Fitz and Eliza or the tie that binds them?

Christmas at Sea Pines Cottage

With its rough gray shingles and weathered slate roof, Sea Pines cottage seems, at first glance, past its prime. But inside this remote fisherman’s house, a driftwood fire crackles in the fireplace, brightly colored rugs cover the floor, and cozy cushions dot the worn, welcoming furniture. A young man named Robert has retreated after the war, planning to spend his days writing, tending to the local lighthouse, and nursing his injuries. For company, he adopts a young Golden Retriever puppy named Meteor.

Robert and Meteor spend months in quiet companionship, until the day Robert rescues a young woman from a storm at sea. Strong-willed and intelligent, Laura sees past Robert’s injuries to the proud, passionate man beneath, and–with some matchmaking help from Meteor–they begin a new life together at the cottage. But even Meteor’s tireless devotion can’t protect his cherished family from all of life’s unexpected challenges–hurdles that will teach each of them lessons of courage, faith, friendship, and the enduring love that can sustain us through life’s coldest seasons.

Sally Smith O’Rourke is a surgical scrub nurse at the City of Hope national cancer research hospital in Duarte, California and resides in the near-by Victorian village of Monrovia.

With her late husband, author Michael O’Rourke (aka F.M. O’Rourke) Smith O’Rourke owned and operated a medical advertising company where she used her diverse talents to produce and co-write teaching films and videos. Working not only with major medical and surgical manufacturing companies but also network television. These endeavors ultimately led to a collaboration on two feature films (direct to video) and three published novels.

The wife and husband writing team of Sally Smith and Michael O’Rourke, being long-time fans of Jane Austen, wrote The Man Who Loved Jane Austen released by Kensington Books in 2006. Kensington followed that very successful effort with The Maidenstone Lighthouse in 2007 and Christmas at Sea Pines Cottage in 2009, both also collaborative projects by Smith and O’Rourke. Published after her partner and spouse’s untimely death in 2001, the publisher chose not to use the names Michael O’Rourke and Sally Smith (as the manuscripts were presented), releasing all three books under Sally Smith O’Rourke.

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen is Sally Smith O’Rourke’s first solo novel.

EVE HALLOWS AND THE BOOK OF SHRIEKS (BOOK 1)

For fourteen-year-old Eve Hallows, life can be summed up in one word—horrible.  She has the most horrible friends.  She lives in a horrible old castle.  Even her family is a bunch of horrible monsters.

However, in the monster-inhabited world of Gravesville—a world where messages are sent through Ouija boards, jack-o’-lanterns get facials to suit their moods, and the worst thing Eve has to deal with are those annoying zombie tourists who overrun her favorite graveyard during the Halloween season—horrible means wonderful.  And everything for Eve is perfectly horrible.

But her life is about to go head over heels when a mysterious group known as The Source starts terrorizing Gravesville.  Now she must move to the human world—where everything is opposite … and for Eve, that’s absolutely adorable!

EVE HALLOWS AND THE BOOK OF SHADOWS (BOOK 2)

Ever since encountering The Source and its minions on Halloween, Eve Hallows has found life surprisingly quiet … not to mention adorably boring!  So when Dad receives a Ouija message that she must return to Gravesville, Eve couldn’t be happier—at least until she discovers the Director of URNS, also known as the Grim Reaper, has a special job for Eve … one that will lead her to New York City and to the true identity of The Source.

With The Book of Shrieks offering zero help and a new URNS agent driving the school boys—and Eve!—crazy, Eve’s beginning to realize this whole saving-the-world nonsense isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.

All this and she still has to find The Book of Shadows….

World Vision: Share the Spirit of Christmas – Win an artisan beaded necklace!

December 9, 2012 By Debra Pearlstein 76 Comments

I really am so impressed and also happy to be working with World Vision this year. They are a humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities around the world to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

In this video, watch how the gift of just one goat helped transform the lives of one family in Tanzania

At World Vision International, you can give a gift of a goat and two chickens, two ducks, sponsor a child or donate to the clean water fund. There are really so many wonderful ways to help.

We are all one global community. Everyone is our brother and sister. Even the smallest donation can help transform lives, and this, I believe, is the true meaning of Christmas. We are not just helping once; we are helping create brighter futures.

World Vision also has a lovely gift catalog full of inspiration. Donors can also receive free handmade gifts such as ornaments from Nairobi and jewelry from Thailand with a contribution to the Maximum Impact Fund, which helps in the areas of greatest needs.

They sent me this absolutely gorgeous handcrafted artisan beaded necklace from Thailand to review. I felt very honored to wear it and found it to be stunning. You can wear it as a necklace looped over or straight or wrapped around your arm as a bracelet. The beads are very beautiful and it is truly a lovely piece of wearable art. It is one of my absolute favorites and goes with everything.  You can get one or gift one with a donation of $60.

Approximate size is 44″ around (22″ long when worn as a single necklace).

I love to wear it wrapped around my arm:

They have also generously offered the same beautiful necklace to one of my readers.

So, this holiday season, I wish you joy, I wish you peace, I wish you love.

Please enter via Rafflecopter below!

Pandora the Curious Book Blast! Win $100 Amazon gc or Paypal Cash!

December 7, 2012 By Debra Pearlstein Leave a Comment

Goddess Girls #9 – Pandora the Curious

Is Pandora about to open up a box of trouble?

One of the few mortals at Mount Olympus Academy, Pandora is famous for her mega quizzical nature—not that she thinks there’s anything wrong with being curious, of course!

Her curiosity kicks into high gear when a godboy named Epimetheus brings a mysterious box to school. Epimetheus is the nephew of an MOA teacher in whose class Pandora once opened another box that sent a few weather disasters to earth. Still, Pandora can’t help but take a peek inside this new box when it unexpectedly lands in her lap. What could be the harm in that, right? Little does she know that opening the box will open up far more trouble than she ever expected!

Authors Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams put a modern spin on classic myths with the Goddess Girls series. Follow the ins and outs of divine social life at Mount Olympus Academy, where the most privileged godboys and goddessgirls in the Greek pantheon hone their mythical skills

Author Suzanne Williams

Suzanne Williams is the award-winning author of nearly 40 books for children, from picture books and easy readers to chapter books and middle grade fiction series. A former elementary school librarian, she lives near Seattle. Her picture book Library Lil (illustrated by Steven Kellogg) won the New Mexico children’s choice award in 2000 and was on several other state award lists. She is co-author (with Joan Holub) of the popular Goddess Girls series(for ages 8 – 12) and Heroes in Training (ages 6 – 11). Other series include Fairy Blossoms and Princess Power.

Author Joan Holub

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children’s books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children’s book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts — Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children’s books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.
