Win $50 Paypal Cash or Amazon GC – Days of Future Past Giveaway

February 19, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein Leave a Comment

Days of Future PastDays of Future Past by Sally Smith O’Rourke

It is by no means an irrational fancy that, in a future existence, we shall look upon what we think of as our present existence, as a dream. –Edgar Allen Poe

It is true that Fate sometimes conspires to right a decades-old wrong. Thus, the 6.8 earthquake that strikes Southern California one warm March night is the fateful event that brings family therapist Ann Hart and trauma specialist Ted McConaughy back together. In search of her cell phone after the tremor, Ann picks up a shard of vintage cut glass from a collection she and her husband gathered during the four years of their marriage. For the millionth time she thinks about the day six years ago when he disappeared on a search and rescue mission in the Sierra foothills.

Sitting atop the shattered crystal, a small silver cigar lighter glistens in the beam of her flashlight. Gently she returns the Victorian piece to the shelf. What does it mean that something she and Ted, her ex-fiancé, bought together survived when Alex’s beautiful glass is smashed to dust? Ann tells herself that it doesn’t mean anything more than glass breaks and silver doesn’t.

Sara Jane McConaughy has never experienced a strong earthquake, and as her father comforts his 16-year-old daughter, his mind is flooded with memories of the Northridge quake in 1994. He was living with his fiancée, his ex-fiancée, and even after all these years he doesn’t know what caused the split, but he always loved her. And he’d been sure she loved him.

Volunteering with the American Red Cross in the aftermath of the earthquake brings Ann and Ted face-to-face for the first time since their break-up, twenty years ago. Angry, flustered, excited, and bewildered by Ted’s sudden appearance and unusual behavior while she’s teaching a small group of people relaxing exercises, Ann demands he leave. Just as excited and bewildered, Ted rushes away. His exit leaves both of them wondering about … everything. The earthquake (or is it seeing Ann?) ignites a series of recurring dreams peopled by total strangers in places Ted has never been.

Accompanied by short lapses of time and sleepwalking, the dreams take a heavy toll on his waking hours. Sara Jane’s concern sends Ted on a quest to discover the cause and find a cure. When all medical possibilities are exhausted, he turns to a colleague, whose diagnosis leaves Ted more baffled than ever. Tom Alderman believes that the dreams are memories of past lives. The lives live in his subconscious, and the cure is hypnotherapy.

After several months of suffering with these increasingly emotional recurring dreams, Ted turns to Ann for help. One of Ann’s specialties is hypnotherapy and since he must be able to trust the hypnotist, Ann is his only salvation. Ann’s agreement to try and help (at the urging of a mutual friend) sends her carefully regimented and calm life into complete turmoil. The garden gate they pass through together sends them on a journey that defies time and reason, forcing them to rethink their past, present, and future. Now, each must reconsider their capacity for love and forgiveness. Things are not always what they seem.

The Importance of Pampering – Have a LUSH Valentine’s Day!

February 14, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 15 Comments

lushvalentinesday1

Let’s face it, guys. Life is stressful. Whether it’s having your car buried completely in snow (yes that was me this week!) or trying to keep all the responsibility balls you’re juggling from crashing into a heap on the ground; we all need love and pampering!

And, the good part is, we don’t need someone to pamper us, because there are so many wonderful ways to do it ourselves!

I’ve found myself saying, but I don’t have time for pampering. The sad truth is that if you don’t make some ‘me’ time, you really won’t have much to give to others or yourself. So, find some time to recharge.

I love to get up extra early some mornings when everyone is sleeping just to leisurely take my time getting out of bed. I find doing yoga then gives me a sense of balance which carries throughout the day.

My favorite pampering activity lately is a hot bath with LUSH products before I go to bed. The experience complete with their aromatherapy and skin soothers usually has me sleeping like a baby as soon as my head hits the pillow.

Here are my Valentine’s Day treats from LUSH this year

HeartThrobs

Heart Throb Bubbleroons

You simply take this lovely bubbleroon and twist apart the two halves and it will last you for two baths! Just crumble it under warm running water as your bath fills. Skin softening shea-butter and blissful essential oils of ylang ylang and geranium mixed with Fairtrade vanilla make for a heavenly bath and silky skin. The water is a passionate shade of red, so if you have a bath big enough for two, bring a friend and share the love! hearthrobubbleroon

The Floating Flower Bath Bomb

I am a huge fan of the Lush bath bombs and this is one of their best! You simply place it in your bath and it will float and fizz releasing a kaleidoscope of colors and beautiful scents. The water was pink, orange and green and smelled incredible, of jasmine and cypress oil. This garden of earthly delights is truly an experience to savor.

Prince Charming Shower Gel

Prince Charming Shower Gel

Every time I am in the bathroom, I open the top and breathe in the delicious smell of this shower gel. It smells very fresh and fruity with pomegranate juice, grapefruit, handmade vanilla pod infusion and almond oil. Very softening, very cleansing. Indulge your senses. Be your own Prince Charming! A definite keeper!

Love Locket Bath Bomb

Love Locket Bath Bomb

This is a really large bath bomb – You can break it into front, back and center and it will last for up to three baths. What’s inside? Beautiful shiny red biodegradable hearts made of agar seaweed, tiny paper hearts and a sensual mix of vanilla, jasmine and neroli essential oils. I felt like I was sinking into soft clouds of relaxation.

Lonely Heart Bubble Bar

Lonely Heart Bubble Bar

I love this bar and ordered more today. As you crumble this lovely heart under running water, a cascade of soft bubbles fill your bath. Warm citrus notes of lemongrass and bergamot, with touches of jasmine and ylang ylang.  My bath was the color of blood oranges! Love!

Unicorn Bubble Bar

Unicorn Bubble Bar

This one is so unusual and I hear no two are alike. I also hear they are made of unicorns, rainbows and dreams. I don’t know about that, but, I do know that this bath felt magically relaxing with heavenly lavender and neroli. I could almost hear mystical chanting as the stresses of the day melted away.

So, why not head over to LUSH online or your local store if you have one nearby and check them out? They are always coming up with new treats to delight the senses and they always give me samples which, yeah, that is totally awesome! All LUSH cosmetics and bath and body products are made with fresh, natural and safe ingredients ethically sourced. No animal testing ever and most are vegan.

Here is one of my absolute favorites! Right now it’s my #1 LUSH product. The Comforter.

The Comforter

The Comforter

This bubble bar is stunning to look at; then you crumble it into your bath and you get plum colored water and gorgeous creamy comforting bubbles. This bar is enough for quite a few baths. The scent is like sweet blackcurrants. When you want to turn it all off and forget the world for a while, this is a great place to be! It lightens my mood and leaves me happy.

On my wishlist: The Lush Spa Gift!

How cool would it to be to give your teen a pre-collegiate experience or build a child’s confidence through project-based learning?

Check out this video which shows The DMA Experience from Digital Media Academy.

With 25 locations at top universities throughout the U.S. and Canada, camps are filling fast. So why not register early to save money and stay off the wait list.

Care From The Comfort of Your Home and a Free Visit with Doctor On Demand! #FeelBetter

February 4, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 7 Comments

DoDlogo

This is a sponsored conversation on behalf of Doctor On Demand, however all opinions are strictly my own.

I loved living in Southern California, but, I seriously missed having changes in the weather! Now that I’m back in New England where I grew up, I’m re-evaluating that thought as we are hit by a series of blizzards that have left us buried in snow. I still would choose having variety though.

Some things I worry about during our storms though: Making sure we have enough food and water, hoping we don’t lose power, and not being able to go out when you want to.

Actually, Winter is a great time for Doctor On Demand! Doctor On Demand is a healthcare service that provides Video Visits with Board Certified Physicians, Psychologists and other medical consultants via smartphone, tablet and computer.

certified_physicians

The Winter is rough on everyone and this year’s flu season is particularly severe. In fact, the CDC recently declared a flu epidemic after 29 states reported experiencing high flu activity.

When you have the flu, you need to get treated immediately for antivirals to work – but hospitals are urging people with flu-like symptoms to avoid the ER.

So, why not let Doctor on Demand help? Doctor On Demand is graciously launching a promotion where your first video visit is FREE. Since we are in the midst of cold and flu season, this is a great time to try it out!

With Doctor On Demand, you can treat the flu from home using your smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer, by having a Video Visit with a Board Certified physician. Their physicians can diagnose, treat, and even write prescriptions for the flu and nearly any other non-emergency medical condition.

pediatricvisit

Doctor On Demand is free to register and the app is free to download. You can even enter your code upon registration, store it in your account, and use it at a later date.

Simply download the Doctor On Demand app on a smartphone or tablet or visit www.doctorondemand.com on your computer and provide a list of your symptoms. You’ll quickly be connected to a provider licensed in your state for a video visit.

My experience:

It’s very easy to use the app and I was asked to fill out some general information along with my current symptoms and any medication I might be taking. After that, a checklist appeared where I could check off any other issues that I might be having or any illnesses.

After a very short wait, Dr Tara greeted me. I used the video chat (you can use that or the audio chat). She was very pleasant and professional and made me feel very comfortable. She went over my history and we talked about my current injury. What was pretty cool was that I could show her the exact area of the pain and where it extended to. She was able to pinpoint the area and we got an idea of what was going on.

It seemed to be a shoulder strain and I asked and she explained to me the differences between a strain and a sprain and also when to use heat and when to use ice. It was very informative and helpful.

I’m taking her advice and my shoulder pain has eased up quite a bit. I’m alternating with heat and cold packs and continuing to take Ibuprophen for the inflammation.

I tend to use my right arm a great deal, and, as a writer/blogger it gets an extra workout, but, I am trying to rest it whenever possible.

I’ll follow up with my primary if it continues and possibly get physical therapy, but, I was very thankful for the help when I couldn’t go out and it was a relief to be comfortable at home and not waiting and waiting in a cold office.

There are times that you don’t have time to go to the doctor, where it’s inconvenient, where the weather is inclement or where you just would love to talk to someone with medical expertise. Doctor on Demand is a great resource that you can use from the comfort of your home.

Give Exercise a Sporting Chance

February 1, 2015 By Debra Pearlstein 11 Comments

Exercise is beneficial for the mind, body and spirit. Physical activity reduces the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. It also boosts confidence, lifts your spirits and helps your brain cope better with stress.

Yet so many of us would rather slump in front of the TV than get up, get out and get moving. Watching the Superbowl  seems the closest some people will get to any action.

For those people who are conscious about their health and do exercise, the focus is very much on “working out” rather than playing a sport. Jogging before work, lifting weights at the gym or taking part in weekly exercise classes are all tried and tested ways of keeping active.

However, playing sports is the old fashioned way of keeping fit that few of us ever consider.

When we were kids we played sports and that kept us healthy. Running round the soccer field, shooting a few hoops or trying out for the track team were motivation enough to get our hearts pumping.

So why do so many of us grow out of playing sports, and opt, instead, for more structured ways of exercising? “Working out” has become an activity in its own right – it’s knocked all the fun out of getting fit with its personal goals and targets to pump more iron or run a faster mile.

In a Vanity Fair poll published in January 2014, the athletic goal most women said they wanted to achieve (28 per cent) was to get through an hour-long step aerobics class.

One of the top sporting ambitions for men was to complete a 3K run (20 per cent).

Where’s the fun in that?

1401182408icv66

Playing a sport incorporates all the fitness benefits associated with getting plenty of exercise with a whole list of added bonuses on top. Boost your social life by making new friends, feel the buzz from trying something new and enjoy the adrenaline rush from the thrill of competition, for example.

And you don’t have to go down the well-travelled path of signing up for a softball league or joining a soccer team.

There’s a a whole host of sports that will capture your imagination and get you excited about playing again.

You don’t even have to commit to a team. Try Taekwondo. Benefits include building strength and instilling discipline as well as helping you achieve self-defense skills. Taekwondo is a particularly active martial art and you can expect to burn around 360 calories during a 90 minute session.

If you’re looking for a graceful form of exercise to help reduce stress, consider tai chi. Though originally developed for self-defense, tai chi helps promote serenity through gentle, flowing movements and is often described as meditation in motion.

Ever thought about fencing? There are loads of local clubs looking for new members. As well as burning around 288 calories an hour, you’ll improve your balance, co-ordination, flexibility and reflexes.

Give badminton a shot. It’s very easy to master and is an intense aerobic work out burning the equivalent of a chocolate bar every half hour. If you join a club you’ll get the additional rush of playing competitively.

Most of all, try something you truly enjoy. We all spend enough time working; make exercise fun.
