With the holiday season upon us, many of us will be taking Road Trips to visit family and friends. I can remember many classic road trips whether with family to visit grandparents or college road trips with my best buds to various music festivals. Ah, good times!
Some tips to make road trips more enjoyable:
Always have good tunes! Bring your most loved cds or burn your own with your favorites. It makes the time fly as you sing along. Or buy that cd you always wanted to before you go!
Whether you are traveling with kids or without, always bring snacks. Very important! People are going to get hungry and it won’t always be convenient to stop or even possible, so make sure you have plenty to munch on. Trail mix is great as well as dried fruit, and if you have salty snacks, always have water or something to drink on hand as well. Water will also prevent dehydration. It’s great to bring along a cooler.
Which leads me to… Plan your trip ahead so that there are rest stops and you’re not just lost on some stretch of road.
If you have kids, think about bringing car games or making a list of ones like finding things outside the window in alphabetical order or Twenty Questions, I Spy or tell a story where everyone takes part. You can leave off just as it’s getting interesting so the next person has to come up with something exciting.
If you have a dvd player, bring some favorite movies or tv series for those in the back seat.
Bring pillows and blankets so everyone can stay comfy.
Make sure you have maps or a good GPS and that cell phones are charged.
And, above all else, have fun!
Make this a road trip where the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination!
Happy Holidays!
Do you have any fond roadtrip memories? Any tips to make roadtripping more enjoyable?

While on our last roadtrip we decided to limit the amount of miles we traveled each day….it proved to be less stressful and a more enjoyable vacation.

Travelling with kids tip, we photocopy a list of all the states before we go and have fun spotting license plates from different states, whoever gets most by the end of the trip wins a prize

Our first road trip to Florida, with 3 kids. It should have taken 13 hours but took 18 :(. The kids were great until the last hour, they finally had a meltdown. My tip is: give yourself a good amount of time to rest & relax.

I agree. Music is key! I’ve had a few really fun roadtrips. The best ones don’t have a tied-down schedule so we can stop and check out stuff along the way! ๐

I definitely agree with bringing pillows and covers. I always get cold on long road trips, but I hate when the car is really hot, so I generally keep the air on. So, everyone else whines, lol!

Good ideas! Thank you for sharing these tips. The older the kids get, the easier it gets, but I still have some small ones that need a little more attention.

We always bring pillows with us when we travel. Not only does it make the trip more comfortable, once you arrive you have your own comfy pillow and don’t have to worry about a pillow that doesn’t agree with you (too hard, too soft, etc).

I think you covered it very well. We have an impaired child and we definetly don’t go on any road trips with our the portable dvd player! One of the greatest parent invention of all time!!

We are getting ready for a HUGE road trip to Orlando this summer. We plan on following all of your recommendations…except “I Spy.” Man alive, but that game drives me crazy!
Another game we play is making a list of the 50 states and seeing how many license plates we notice while traveling. Although we’ve never gotten all 50 in a single trip, we have at one time or another seen all 50.
