Cat Magic – a review of Deep Midnight Perfume Oils

July 2, 2012 By Debra Pearlstein 36 Comments

“Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.”

― Rumi

It’s so wonderful when you find work that you love so much that it is truly a passion. So many artisans embody this and Cat Marx most definitely does. Cat Marx to me is an artist, a dreamer, a visionary, a master perfumer. She puts so much love, care and brilliance into each and every creation!

I think imagination is one of the greatest gifts we have! So, I was thrilled to be able to sample some scents from Catrianna’s Deep Midnight Perfumes Etsy shop. Each one has a story behind it and you can get happily lost in a world of  dreams, mystery and magic.

There are over 90 unique and wonderful scents to choose from bringing in elements from history, fantasy, legends and lore to tantalize your senses.
I am not a fan of perfumes that smell artificial at all. In fact, some give me a headache! However, Cat’s are some of the only ones that don’t! This right away was exciting to me as I knew I had found scents that I could wear and she has an incredible selection. Also, Cat  is always coming up with new decadent delectables!
She sent me a fun collection of samples to experience in a lovely black mesh bag. I couldn’t wait to unwrap the mystery.
At the first scent I was in love and this is one of my favorites:

CHILDREN Of The NIGHT:  shades of Gothic Victorian and Steampunk.  A nice blend of dragon’s blood, silky champas, deep vanilla, dark black fig, and the haunting faint breath of heliotrope.

I love the blend of this one. It’s sweet without being cloying and the champas give it a mystical sensual appeal.  The children of the night dance in alleyways, run wild in the streets and listen to no one.

CATRIANNA’S CAULDRON : Gothic, Halloween perfume oil

This one blew my mind!

Catrianna’s Cauldron: A little of this, a little of that… there’s magic in here!
Sweet Sudanese frankincense, rare spices, a deep warm luscious vanilla, and a pinch of sage, all topped off with a whiff of magic cauldron smoke.

This is just so lush and the smoky essence intrigues me. How does she get that into a scent? I love this one and wear it often.

Some more treats:

SANGREAL PERFUME OIL: Gothic, medieval, Legends of the Grail Perfume Series

Comprised of the word San and Graal, Sangreal has come to mean: Holy Grail, and also Blood Stone. The Holy Grail, long sought after in legend by Arthur Pendragon and his Knights of the Round Table. This perfume blend is a rich floral and resin blend that will sweep your senses into the time of legends of kings, maidens, and knights and make you feel as though you have walked into a medieval chamber.

Three very different red and black roses, enigmatic dragon’s blood, and a magical combination of other sacred resins and woods make for a scent that is rich and long lasting. The perfume tips towards the feminine side of the scale, but it is a deep enough rose scent that it can be worn by both sexes.

This is a deep darker rose blend with an earthy, Renaissance feel.

VIXEN VENOM: GOTHIC  Amber, vanilla, patchouli

The model here is Cat!

Vixen Venom: Wicked is your middle name. You entice with a blend of rich amber, sweet musk, the sweetest vanilla, and a dash of patchouli for that extra bite.

Some other scents I sampled and loved are:

LADIES OF LONDON:

Victorian, Gothic Perfume Oil, Les Miserables Inspired

Sensual florals highlighted with lily of the Valley, spicy indulgent opium, a bowlful of the deepest sensual red berries, and caresses of frankincense and patchouli for added mystery.

THE TEMPLE of TIME:  Magic, Mystery, Ancient History, Gothic

Two lovely and different frankincense scents, wonderful chypre, and a bit of cardamom create a magical aroma that will transport you to another time and place.

BOUDICA: PERFUME OIL– Celtic, Gothic, Magic, Historically inspired

I found this one extremely enchanting!

Highland heather, rich honey mead, the aromas of roasting barley and wheat on an open fire, tanned leather, and the fog rising on a forest of green.

This reminds me of the wonderful smell of a fireplace in winter and has a feminine yet very earthy feel.

EUPHROSYNE:

This had a very complex and interesting scent. Euphrosyne comes from the Greek and Latin, meaning “mirth,” “merriment.” Her scent is a myriad blend of tropical fruits, fresh pears, red berries, cream, figs, Sicilian orange, pummelo, caramel, lily of the valley, and a barely hidden note of red licorice.

I also tried Alexandria, with frankincense, amber and myrrh reminiscent of ancient kingdoms; Dr Nautilus, with sandalwood and deep eastern spices;  Druids of Awen, with earthy cedarwood and basil – an earthy unisex scent; and Jack in the Green, with oakmoss, vetiver, and patchouli. That one has a more masculine sense to it.

I liked them all though some more than others. The ones I listed first (and Boudica) are my favorites. To be honest, I’d love to try them all!

What’s exciting to me is that every scent is unique and well-crafted. There is a story behind each bottle just waiting to unfold.

All perfumes are made with the highest quality fragrance and/ or essential oils that are vegan, cruelty free, phthalate and paraben free, and are blended into a base of pure organic jojoba oil. Items are always carefully packaged and shipped.

I can’t wait to try Cat’s new line inspired by The Hobbit which will be released during summer and fall!

In fact, I love to go to her Etsy shop and explore all the different worlds! Gothic, steampunk, ancient Egypt, Celtic culture. You will find mystery, magic, myths, legends, and romance. You will find Cat Magic!

Hi, I am looking for a musk that keeps its scent throughout the day. Tired of the perfumes that u have to freshen up during the day and the cost of them. I know there are quite a few musks but would greatly appreciate it if you could send me some samples so I can finally stop searching . Thank u so much.

Some of the elements you described I actually have no idea how they smell! These are really interesting, and I’m with you about how artificial scents give me a headache.

Like you, I have a problem with getting headaches from some scents. I’m beyond amazed at her selection of items. All of them sound so very amazing. I made sure to follow her on Facebook and add her to my favorites on Etsy. Hopefully, when I have a little extra money, I can talk my hubby into letting me get some of the items. Thank you so much for introducing me 🙂
