I found Last Days to be a deeply reflective and layered film. Director Justin Lin presents a complex portrait of John Chau, neither glorifying nor condemning him. While Chau’s mission may appear shortsighted or ill-conceived, the film reveals the passion and longing for purpose that drove him, a reminder of the humanity behind his choices.
The idea of a tribe completely untouched by the outside world is both fascinating and troubling. It raises questions about curiosity, faith, and the moral boundaries of exploration. For such communities to survive, they must be protected for their own safety and health as well as for ethical reasons.
At the same time, The Last Days offers a beautiful and intimate portrayal of Chau’s search for meaning. The cinematography is breathtaking, often feeling like a character in its own right. I appreciated this film for its quiet beauty and its nuanced approach to a difficult true story.
